Agribuisness
What is Agribusiness?
Farming succession planning refers to the orderly transfer (usually over time) of management, responsibility, ownership and control of farming assets from one generation to the next. Succession is like any other plan in that the earlier you start, the more options you have. However, it is never too late to gain the benefit of planning. The old adage “better late than never” applies.
Because succession planning issues facing farmers are very different to such issues in the broader business or commercial community, it is essential for farmers to take advice from professionals (lawyers, accountants, agricultural/financial advisors and rural counsellors) who have specialist knowledge and extensive practical experience in dealing with farming matters.
The term agribusiness often means different things to different people. In a sense, every farm or pastoral property can be described as an agribusiness however, we use the term to refer to those businesses that provide goods or services to the agricultural sector.
We have extensive experience in acting in such businesses including:
Machinery and vehicle dealers;
Chemical and merchandise suppliers;
Investors and funders of agricultural activities;
Rural retailers;
Rural trade based businesses;
City based businesses dealing with farmers and pastoralists;
Importers and wholesalers of rural products;
Grain traders; and
Rural real estate agents.
Alex Granich of Granich Partners has been advising farmers in respect of succession planning matters since he commenced practice in Merredin in 1976 shortly after being admitted to the bar.
Alex’s extensive legal experience in estate planning is complimented, not only by his own personal farming experience of some 20 years, but also by being a member of a family that has known the highs and lows of farming in the Eastern Wheatbelt for the best part of a century.
